Understanding US Tipping Culture

Tipping is part of everyday culture in the US. Knowing the norms by situation keeps you from being caught off guard.

Norms by situation

• Restaurants (table service): 15–20% of the pre-tax total
• Delivery: 10–15% or at least $3–5
• Salons / nails: 15–20%
• Taxi / Uber: 10–15%
• Counter orders (fast food): usually not needed

When paying by card, a tip option often appears on screen. Tip more for exceptional service, and for large parties check whether gratuity is already included on the receipt to avoid double tipping.
