The SSN is your core identifier in the US and is required for employment, banking, and credit.
How to apply
Visit your nearest Social Security Administration (SSA) office and submit Form SS-5. In some areas it's easier to book an appointment online first.
Documents you'll need
- Passport and visa (or green card)
- I-94 arrival record
- Employment documents (for work visas)
The card usually arrives by mail within about two weeks. Even before it arrives, telling your employer that you've applied is often enough to start working.
