Must-Have Apps to Download Right After Arriving in the U.S.

The moment you step out of the airport, American life begins. From activating a SIM card to finding your first apartment, your smartphone is your most important tool. These are the apps that Korean immigrants, international students, and expats consistently rely on during those first critical weeks.
💳 Banking & Money Transfers
- Zelle / Venmo — The go-to apps for sending money between U.S. bank accounts. Zelle is built into most major banking apps and transfers are instant. Venmo works as a standalone app and is popular among younger users for splitting bills.
- Wise (formerly TransferWise) — If you need to send money back to Korea, Wise charges significantly lower fees than traditional banks. On a $1,000 transfer, you can typically save $20–$40 compared to a bank wire.
- Your bank's app (Chase, Bank of America, etc.) — Once you open a checking account, download your bank's app immediately. Mobile check deposit, account transfers, and ATM locators are all built in.
🚗 Getting Around
- Google Maps — Covers driving, public transit, and walking directions across the U.S. Download offline maps for your area so you're covered even without a data plan.
- Uber / Lyft — More affordable and predictable than taxis, especially from the airport. Look for the designated Rideshare pickup zone before you leave baggage claim — it's usually a short walk from the main exit.
- GasBuddy — Once you have a car, this app finds the cheapest gas stations nearby. Prices can vary by $0.20–$0.50 per gallon within just a few miles.
🏠 Housing & Community
- Zillow / Apartments.com — The standard tools for apartment hunting. Use the map view to check school districts and commute distances at the same time.
- Nextdoor — A neighborhood app where locals share free items, safety updates, and business recommendations. Great for getting the real feel of a new area fast.
- KakaoTalk — Staying in touch with family in Korea is still easiest through KakaoTalk. Free calls and messages over Wi-Fi mean no international roaming charges.
