How to Apply for an ITIN
Netraweb · June 9, 2026
If you cannot get an SSN (certain visas, dependents, etc.), you apply for an ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number) to file taxes.
How to apply
- Complete Form W-7 and attach your tax return (1040)
- Provide identity documents (original passport or certified copy)
- Apply by IRS mail, through a CAA (acceptance agent), or at an IRS TAC
If mailing original IDs feels risky, a CAA lets you apply without sending originals. An ITIN is for tax purposes only and does not replace work authorization or an SSN. Periodically check whether it has expired from non-use.
